It is always a special day when I see something new. Even better when it is in our backyard!

On August 18, 2020 I was able to get these pictures of a great crested flycatcher. I had seen one a few weeks earlier, but not managed to take a picture. Quite frankly, at that time I was not sure what I was seeing, never having seen one before. But in these pictures it is clearly not one of the phoebes that hangs around our yard.

This species is noticeably larger than the phoebe and, at least when it was visiting us, was hunting high up near the tops of the trees. The phoebe is a lower level hunter. I hope we see this one again soon.
